Demetria Cooper Martin was born November 6, 1956 in Herlong, California to Connie Mae Banks Cooper and Jim Chatman Cooper, both of whom preceded her in death. She was the 3rd of 5 children.
Demetria attended Herlong Primary, Elementary and High Schools, Lassen Community College, University of Nevada Reno, University of Nevada Las Vegas and University of Phoenix.
During her High School and Community College years, Demetria excelled academically; earning an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree from Lassen Community College and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. Her favorite subjects were Math and History.
Demetria’s vibrant spirit, compassionate heart and magnetic personality were evident from an early age. Whether at home, in the neighborhood or among family and friends, she had a remarkable gift for bringing joy wherever she went. She never hesitated to encourage the overlooked, champion for the unfortunate or find ways to make others feel welcome and valued.
Demetria was baptized at an early age as both parents were actively involved in the church. She was first converted at First Baptist Church in Herlong, California pastored by Reverend David McBride.
Demetria began her employment career at the movie theater in Herlong while attending high school. After marriage, Demetria began a 20-year career in banking. After working for several banks in Reno and Las Vegas, she began working for New Ventures Capital Corporation. Following New Ventures, she began a career in Commercial Real Estate, working for three different companies and honing her skills, eventually opening her own Real State Business (Diamond Crown).
Demetria began dating Grenell Martin in April 1972 and they were married in Herlong, CA on November 6, 1976. To this union, one child was born, Oshaunessy Rose Martin. They resided in Reno for 13 years. In the wake of Bank mergers, they elected to relocate to Las Vegas as Grenell was transferred there.
Demetria was a dedicated person, opinionated and a perfectionist. She would give 100% in everything they did. When Demetria and Grenell were married, they stated in their vows for better or for worse, until death do they part. God called her home after 49 years and 10 months of marriage.
One of Demetria’s favorite past times was being with her grandchildren Dallen and Xyler. She could not get enough of visiting them and watching them grow.
Demetria and Grenell were members of Mount Zion Full Gospel Fellowship under the leadership of Bishop John Wayne Arnold and first lady Carlis Arnold shortly after moving to Las Vegas. They later united with Greater Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada under the leadership of Dr. Welton T. Smith, III and first lady Debra R. Smith where she was a faithful member for more than 25 years. She loved the Lord and had a lifelong walk of faith that shaped every area of her life. She was chairwoman of the Trustee Ministry, vice-chair of the Mother’s Board and trustee advisor to the Prayer Band. She loved her church and church family. She was a mighty prayer warrior and had a beautiful singing voice. She was also an author who published a Christian book (Airtemed).
Demetria leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Grenell Martin; daughter, Oshaunessy Rose Murillo Martin; son-in law, Jesus Murillo Juarez; 2 grandchildren, Dallen and Xyler Murillo-Martin; 3 brothers, Jim C. Cooper (wife Joyce) of Kansas City, MO, Avery Cooper and Greg Cooper of Las Vegas; father-in-law, Curtis Martin Jr.; brothers-in-law, Curtis Martin, III (wife Pamela) and Dwight Martin (wife Rina).
One brother, Joseph E. Cooper; mother-in-law, Rosie M. Martin and brother-in-law, Ronald Martin preceded her in death.
She also leaves behind several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews along with extended family members, church members and dear friends; all of whom were enriched by her faith, generosity and enduring love.
