Dorothy Jean Johnson

Dorothy Jean Johnson was born to Johnnie Mae Brown and Hampton Brown on April 29, 1945, in Longview, Texas. After graduating high school, she married Matthew Johnson 1st, and together they raised four children: Sons: Matthew 2nd, Matthew 3rd, Matthew 4th, and daughter Tina, they were blessed with 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

In 1980, the family relocated to Los Angeles, California, to be closer to her sister, Claudette Ratcliff. There, Dorothy joined New Pleasant Grove Church under the leadership of the late William Charles Senior. She was known for her powerful voice as a gospel singer and her dedication as a member of the Eastern Star. She worked diligently on the burial and order team, caring deeply for all those in her community. Her kindness and warmth touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

On April 13, 2025, Dorothy transitioned from labor to reward. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie Mae Brown and Hampton Brown; her siblings, Jessie, Johnny, Hampton Jr., and Ezell; her son, Matthew 2nd; and her, Tina.

Dorothy is survived by her two children, Matthew 3rd (Jessie), Matthew 4th (Robin); her sister, Claudette Ratcliff, 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, and her church family. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
