In Loving Memory of Yat How Choi

December 5, 1938 – January 14, 2026

Yat How Choi passed away peacefully in his sleep at 6:00 PM on January 14, 2026. He lived a life marked by learning, service, devotion to family, and quiet joy.

He was born intoa large family of twelve siblings. His father, Shih-Yu Choi, was a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and businessman known for his generosity, often helping the poor by providing medicine and financial support. His mother, Lai Ngor So, was a devoted housewife who cared deeply for her family.

In 1949, Yat How and his family moved to Hong Kong. In 1960, he obtained his teacher’s certificate and began his career as an English teacher at Wong Tai Sin Salvation Army Primary School, where he taught until 1969. His passion for education and self-improvement led him to later study geography at the University of Hong Kong.

During this time, he also served as the General Manager of the Kowloon-Canton Railway. He loved traveling, especially to the United Kingdom, where he frequently went to further his studies.

Yat How met his wife, Shuk Kit Wong, through their shared love of learning—she wished to learn English, and he wanted to learn Chinese. What began as language exchange became a lifelong partnership filled with love and mutual respect. Together, they raised three children: their eldest daughter Hester Choi, second daughter Elaine Choi, and youngest son Robert Choi.

In 1985, Shuk Kit moved to the United States with their three children. In 1987, the family immigrated to Australia, and in 1989, out of concern for Hester, Yat How made the decision to reunite the family by moving everyone back to the United States. There, he embraced a new chapter of life, changing careers to become a real estate agent and insurance agent.

Beginning in the 2010s, he gradually transitioned into retirement. He discovered a passion for ballroom dancing and took great joy in participating in competitions—an expression of his discipline, elegance, and love of movement.

In 2018, Yat How and his wife moved to Las Vegas to enjoy retirement. Some of his happiest moments were simple ones: going to the casino with his wife and sharing a $10 buffet dinner afterward.
